Save Summerlands Car Park and Protect M&S in Muswell Hill

You may already be aware of proposals in the Haringey Council’s Draft Local Plan that list the Summerland Gardens car park (behind Marks & Spencer) as a site for potential future development.

Because of the uncertainty around this, Marks & Spencer has now confirmed to Muswell Hill Lib Dem Councillor, Pippa Connor, that they have paused a planned multi-million-pound investment in its Muswell Hill store. This sends a clear warning: the possible loss of this car park could directly threaten the long-term future of this vital anchor store in our town centre.

The risks to Muswell Hill are significant:

Up to 66% of the town centre’s formal paid parking bays could be lost if both Summerland Gardens and the Fortis Green Road car parks disappear
This level of parking loss could make it far harder for shoppers to visit - especially older residents, families, and those with limited mobility
Trade could fall across the high street, putting independent businesses and local jobs at real risk
Increased parking stress and congestion on surrounding residential roads
Pressure for large-scale redevelopment in a protected conservation area, potentially out of keeping with Muswell Hill’s character
A weakened town centre with fewer visitors, fewer shops, and reduced vitality

Accessible parking is not a luxury in Muswell Hill, it is a practical necessity that supports our shops, services, and community life. Removing a key car park risks triggering a damaging chain reaction:

reduced access → reduced trade → store closures → loss of vibrancy

We are urging the Council to remove Summerland Gardens car park from the Draft Local Plan and provide certainty that this essential town centre infrastructure will be protected, and we need your support to do the same.
