Haringey election results: Liberal Democrats increase representation as Labour loses majority

Haringey’s local elections produced one of the most dramatic political shifts the borough has seen in decades.

For the first time in 55 years, Labour no longer holds an overall majority on Haringey Council. The borough is now under no overall control, with the Green Party emerging as the largest group on the council.

The final result across Haringey was:

  • Green – 27
  • Labour – 21
  • Liberal Democrat – 8
  • Vacant – 1 (following the disqualification of a newly elected Green councillor in Northumberland Park ward, where a by-election will now take place)

The Liberal Democrats increased our number of councillors and secured strong results across much of west Haringey, including major victories in Crouch End, Highgate, Muswell Hill and Fortis Green.

Who forms the next administration, and therefore runs Haringey Council for the coming year, will be determined at the Council AGM on 20th May.

Alexandra Park

Despite a strong Liberal Democrat campaign in Alexandra Park, Labour narrowly held both seats after opposition votes split between multiple parties.

Labour’s vote share in the ward fell by around 15%, with the Liberal Democrats finishing just 101 votes behind.

We would like to congratulate AJ Egemonye and Melanie Gingell on their election, and pay tribute to outgoing Lib Dem councillor Alessandra Rossetti for her eight years of dedicated service to the area. During her time as councillor, Alessandra helped secure improvements including the new playground at Tambo Recreation Ground, pedestrian crossings and pavements, support for step-free access at the station, and the successful campaign to keep the library open.

Bounds Green

Bounds Green produced one of the closest results in the borough.

Although Liberal Democrat candidate Dan was just 29 votes short of election, Labour narrowly retained both seats after a split in opposition votes. Labour’s vote share in the ward fell by more than 20% compared to the previous election.

We congratulate Emily Arkell and Andrea Hodgson on their election and will continue to hold Labour councillors to account locally.

Crouch End

Crouch End delivered one of the Liberal Democrats’ strongest results anywhere in Haringey.

All three Liberal Democrat candidates were elected, pushing Labour into second place and securing one of the highest vote totals in the borough.

We would also like to thank outgoing Labour councillors Lester Buxton and Cressida Johnson for their service to the community and for the constructive way they worked across party lines.

Fortis Green

In Fortis Green, Dawn Barnes was successfully re-elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor.

Unfortunately, despite strong support locally, Matt and Viv were narrowly defeated after a significant number of split votes, with fewer than 100 votes separating them from the winning Labour candidates.

Harringay

In Harringay ward, the Green Party gained all three seats from Labour as part of a wider Green surge across the east and centre of the borough.

We congratulate Jo Kuper, Rosie Latchford and Marc Jenner on their election, and thank outgoing Labour councillors Anna Abela, Gina Adamou and Zena Brabazon for their work on behalf of the community.

Highgate

Highgate returned two Liberal Democrat councillors, with Nick da Costa and Scott Emery both re-elected with several hundred votes more than any other candidates in the ward.

However, despite the strong overall result, Shamim was narrowly defeated by fewer than 100 votes after a significant number of split votes allowed the Green Party to gain the third seat.

We would also like to pay tribute to outgoing Liberal Democrat councillor Marsha Isilar-Gosling for her hard work and commitment to Highgate over many years.

Hornsey

Labour retained all three seats in Hornsey ward.

We congratulate Dana Carlin, Adam Small and Elin Weston on their election. Although we were unsuccessful locally, we are pleased that neighbouring wards including Crouch End and Muswell Hill returned strong Liberal Democrat teams.

Muswell Hill

Muswell Hill elected both Liberal Democrat candidates, pushing Labour into second place.

We would like to thank outgoing councillors Pippa Connor and Cathy Brennan for their service to the area. Pippa Connor represented Muswell Hill as a Liberal Democrat councillor for 12 years and made a huge contribution to the community.

Stroud Green

Stroud Green saw a strong Green Party performance, with the Greens winning all three seats.

Although the Liberal Democrats achieved our goal of overtaking Labour and finishing second, the wider Green surge across the borough carried the Greens to victory locally.

We congratulate Beth Anderson, Gio Iozzi and Eddy Thacker on their election, and thank outgoing Labour councillors Alex Worrall, Eldridge Culverwell and George Dunstall for their service to the ward.

Thank you

Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported Liberal Democrat candidates across Haringey — whether by voting for us, displaying posters, delivering leaflets, volunteering, or simply taking the time to speak with us during the campaign.

Where Liberal Democrat councillors were elected, we will continue working hard for every resident. And in areas where we narrowly missed out, our local teams will continue campaigning and standing up for residents alongside our councillor colleagues across the borough.
