Lib Dems welcome Supreme Court judgement on Brexit case

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the Conservative Government must introduce a bill in parliament to trigger Article 50 and the process of leaving the EU.

Dawn Barnes, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Hornsey & Wood Green, comments:

“I welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold parliamentary sovereignty. Being a member of the EU gives UK citizens many rights and the idea that a Prime Minister could take those rights away without a vote in parliament was ridiculous.

“However, I am concerned that Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn is not providing an effective opposition to Theresa May’s dangerous strategy of pursuing a hard Brexit regardless of the potential economic consequences for the country. In fact, the Labour Leader has said he will whip Labour MPs to vote for the triggering of Article 50.

“In contrast Lib Dem Leader, Tim Farron, has said that the Lib Dems will oppose Article 50, unless the British public is given a vote on the final Brexit deal. The Liberal Democrats remain united in our commitment to the single market and to a second referendum on the final Brexit deal.”
